Frozen shrimp is a practical option for seafood consumption, as it can be stored for an extended period. However, its quality largely depends on how it is handled and stored. Improper storage can lead to a decline in texture, taste, and overall freshness. To ensure shrimp remains in optimal condition until it is ready to be cooked, it is essential to understand the basic principles of proper storage. Here’s what you need to know!

Shrimp Shelf Life Based on Storage Temperature

The shelf life of shrimp is highly influenced by its storage temperature:

  • ±2 hours at room temperature (20-25°C).
  • 1-2 days in a chiller (2-5°C).
  • Up to 1 year in a freezer (at least -20°C).

These differences are mainly due to bacterial activity, which increases at higher temperatures. At room temperature, bacteria grow rapidly, causing shrimp to spoil within hours. Chilling can slow down this process, but it does not completely stop it. In contrast, freezing significantly suppresses bacterial growth. This makes freezer storage the most effective method for preserving shrimp quality over a longer period.

Best Practices for Storing Frozen Shrimp

1. Keep shrimp in its original packaging

Shrimp should remain in its original packaging until it is ready to be used. The packaging protects it from air exposure, which can cause oxidation and reduce quality.
