7 Water Parameters That Affect Shrimp Performance

Pond water conditions play a major role in shrimp health, growth, and survival rates. That is why water quality should be monitored regularly, including observing daily fluctuations. Consistent monitoring helps farmers identify potential issues early, allowing corrective actions to be taken before they impact farming performance.

Water Parameters That Should Be Monitored Regularly

The following water quality parameters are important to monitor throughout the shrimp cultivation cycle.

1. Water color

The ideal pond water color is generally greenish-brown. On the other hand, reddish-brown and bluish-green water should be monitored closely, as they may indicate unstable pond conditions. Frequent changes in water color also need attention, unstable water color fluctuations can stress shrimp and increase the risk of health problems.

2. Water transparency

The ideal water transparency ranges from 30-40 cm. Transparency below 20 cm can limit sunlight penetration, resulting in lower water temperatures and less effective plankton photosynthesis. Meanwhile, transparency above 40 cm allows excessive sunlight into the pond, which is less favorable for shrimp.

3. Water pH

The ideal pond water pH ranges between 7.5–9. In addition to maintaining the proper pH level, stability is equally important. Sudden pH fluctuations can disrupt the balance of aquatic organisms and cause stress to shrimp.
