Ibu Luluk is one of the female shrimp farmers in Demak who is trained by Balai Besar Perikanan Budidaya Air Payau, Jepara. Starting out with limited resources to continue her late father’s business, she is now the sole decision maker in her farm.

Despite coming from an educational background that does not relate to the aquaculture industry, Ibu Luluk was determined to make the best of her parents’ legacy. Her determination and willingness to learn made it possible for her to develop her cultivation. Apart from being the pioneer of intensive farming in her area, she is also entrusted to lead the “Kelompok Tani Ikan dan Udang Pasopati Jaya”.

Gender equality remains one of the existing issues in the shrimp industry. The fact is women are just as capable as men to be involved in various processes, from preparation, cultivation, harvesting, to post-harvesting. Female shrimp farmers are also known for their meticulousness in handling financial management, sorting, and grading shrimp. Ibu Luluk has proven this, along with other female farmers in various regions.

The rise of female farmers in the midst of a male-dominated industry

Angga is a shrimp farm technician in one of the farms in Bantul, Yogyakarta. Started out as a farm assistant, he is now entrusted to manage 11 ponds. In running the cultivation, he believes that the key is to open himself up to gain and share knowledge.

Initially, Angga still did trials and errors to figure out the best strategy for his farm and hopefully improve productivity. Realizing that various factors such as diseases and poor water quality can affect his cultivation success, Angga relied on the use of data to guide him in his cultivation.

After using the JALA App for 2 cycles, he found it easier to record his feed data, DoC, and water quality. Since he managed 11 ponds, recording all the data in a single app saved him from much hassle. He could simply show the results from his smartphone instead of using pen and paper. 

Moreover, on JALA App, he could read cultivation tips, information on shrimp diseases, the latest updates from the shrimp industry, and shrimp prices in his area. He could also get consultation service from JALA’s responsive support team. Using well-recorded data, Angga believed that he could evaluate cultivation success based on its history and plan strategies for the next cultivation.

Pak Angga solves the hassle of recording cultivation data of 11 shrimp ponds

Antonius Kurnia is a shrimp farmer from PT Agel Kencana in Situbondo, East Java. Anton started his cultivation 29 years ago. One of the biggest challenges during his cultivation include water quality measurement due to the multiple existing parameters that can only be measured manually.

Pak Anton recognizes the importance of measuring water quality and monitoring it regularly. He believes that knowing current water quality conditions can help him understand whether his shrimp are growing well. Previously, the technology used in measuring water quality involved the measurement of multiple parameters manually one-by-one.

Pak Anton has now benefited from JALA’s technology, namely JALA Baruno and JALA App, which greatly eases his cultivation. Using JALA Baruno, he can measure 4 water quality parameters at once. The measurement is also more accurate since it is done right in the pond water without the need to move the water sample to another location. Equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) technology, data recording is no longer a manual process, as it can be directly transmitted through the internet.

Moreover, he also used the JALA App, a shrimp cultivation management where he can record cultivation data and compare it to previous data, observing the trends and changes. He also gains access to cultivation tips such as the suitable treatments for his farm.

Anton has now overcome his cultivation challenges. He hopes JALA will keep growing to help farmers throughout their cultivation journey.

How Antonius solves various cultivation problems with JALA’s technology

Pak Asnan is a traditional shrimp farmer from Banyuwangi. On average, his farm produces 200-500 kg of shrimp per cultivation cycle.

Pak Asnan was part of the Tebar by JALA program held by JALA and Balai Besar Perikanan Budidaya Air Payau, Jepara. He received field assistance with a community-based approach, during which he was introduced to biosecurity systems and technology facilities to help boost productivity. As a result, his farm was upgraded to a semi-intensive farm. 

After the program, Pak Asnan’s shrimp productivity increased to 1 tonne, up to 5 times of his usual productivity. Not only that, his cultivation mass also increased up to 2 times with a shrimp size of up to 92. Moreover, Pak Asnan has now learned how to cultivate in a data-driven approach and monitor his farm while applying biosecurity practices.


Pak Asnan was part of the Tebar by JALA program who successfully increased his productivity and cultivation mass.

How Pak Asnan increases his shrimp productivity by up to 5 times

Vannamei shrimp farmers are used to countless trials and errors in perfecting their cultivation, including PT Indmira, which is now in their second generation. “We often feel like giving up many times, but we are also excited to keep growing,” said Aryo Wiryawan, CEO of PT Indmira.

PT Indmira has tried different cultivation products and farm locations, modifying different cultivation methods to find the most efficient and optimum one, from extensive/traditional, semi intensive, to intensive farming.

The journey of experimenting and developing the best cultivation method took up to 11 years. Cultivation methods should be tested and recorded to find the proper formulation. Finally, PT Indmira’s business line discovered a more comprehensive way to record cultivation data.

PT Indmira used JALA App, an all-in-one shrimp management application to monitor farms even from afar. This greatly helped Aryo, who has to manage his time in controlling various business priorities. His farm also used JALA Baruno to measure and monitor multiple parameters of their pond water quality at once. 

Aryo, who is also one of JALA’s founders, continued, “JALA offers more than applications or devices. We help farmers reveal information about their farm to help them make the best decision by evaluating their data stored in our system.”
