Vannamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei), is one of the most popular types of shrimp that is widely cultivated in various countries, including Indonesia. This type of shrimp is known for their white legs and segmented bodies.

Vannamei shrimp can survive and grow well in various environments as long as parameters such as temperature, pH, DO, and salinity are kept at a range which matches their natural habitat. By paying attention to ideal farm environment conditions and adjusting it to shrimp’s needs, vannamei shrimp farmers can reap significant profits from their harvest.

Farmers just have to ensure that the cultivation water conditions are adjusted to ideal parameters for vannamei shrimp. Here are the normal ranges for parameters of cultivation water in vannamei shrimp farms:

  • Temperature: 26-32°C
  • Salinity: 15-30 ppt
  • pH: 7.5-8.5
  • DO: > 4 ppm
  • Alkalinity: 100-150 ppm

Aside from these parameters, farmers also need to control the population of Vibrio in their shrimp farm at ≤ 1 x 10³ CFU/ml to reduce the risk of diseases. The pond water should be kept brownish green, which shows there are sufficient phytoplanktons as natural feed for shrimp and to serve as a buffer against the intensity of sunlight.

Conclusion

Vannamei shrimp are marine shrimp that live in tropical oceans with a temperature of more than 20°C. Nevertheless, they thrive well in various environments and are suitable to be cultivated in farms as long as farmers keep temperature, salinity, pH, and DO at ideal conditions.
