Daily feed input is an important aspect of shrimp farming. Shrimp cannot grow healthily and optimally without sufficient and high-quality feed. Meanwhile, feed occupies the largest operational costs, namely 50-60% of the total production costs per cycle.

## Challenges in Using Feeding Trays and How to Overcome Them
Although the feeding tray method is very effective, there are few considerations to note:
- If the shrimp are not actively eating inside the feeding tray, make sure the feeding tray is placed in a convenient place and is not disturbed by predators.
- If the feed dissolves quickly in water, use high quality feed that is not easily broken.
- If the feeding tray results are interpreted incorrectly, conduct routine recording to obtain an accurate feeding pattern.

## How to Use the Feeding Tray Method to Monitor Feed
You can follow the steps below to monitor feed using the feeding tray.
### Feeding Tray Setup
Make sure the feeding tray is clean and  undamaged. Then, place the feeding tray in a location with a stable water flow and easy access for shrimp. 
### Feeding
First, spread the feed evenly in the anco. Then, adjust the amount of feed to the estimated weight and needs of the shrimp (see table).

### Feeding Tray Monitoring
Check the feeding tray according to the hour based on their age, about 1–2 hours after feeding. Observe the amount of remaining feed as well as the presence and behavior of shrimp around the feeding tray.
### Feed Adjustment
If there is no feed left, add 10% of the previous dose. If 1 of the 4 feeding trays has leftover feed, keep the dosage consistent. If there is remaining feed in 2–3 feeding trays, reduce the dose by 10%. If all feeding trays still have leftover feed, reduce the dose by 20%.

## Cultivating Without Evaluating Daily Feed Inputs

Overfeeding may cause a domino effect in the pond. In theory, temperature is a factor that affects the rate of biochemical reactions in nature, and water temperature can be affected by location and local weather. In areas with high rainfall intensity, for example, water temperatures are often lower.

When cultivating shrimp, we frequently encounter unexpected temperature dynamics. Extreme temperature fluctuations will have an impact on shrimp farm ecosystems and shrimp physiology. How does temperature impact it? Read the discussion below.

## The Effect of Temperature on Shrimp Farming
In shrimp farming, temperature affects growth, survival rate (SR), oxygen consumption, [molting cycle](https://jala.tech/blog/cultivation-tips/molting-in-shrimp), and immune response. As cold-blooded organisms, shrimp are exceptionally sensitive to temperature fluctuations in their environment. Drastic temperature fluctuations may stress shrimp, lower their appetite, slow their growth, and potentially raise disease risk.

Sudden drops in temperature can cause stress and even mortality to shrimp, particularly those infected with Vibrio. Too low temperatures (below 26°C) also affect shrimp immunity, making them susceptible to disease.

On the other hand, high temperatures (over 32°C) cause faster shrimp metabolism, which is related to their appetite. When the water temperature is high, shrimp appetite increases, causing the feed conversion ratio (FCR) to rise. Increased  water temperature may also raise the sensitivity of toxins produced by cyanobacteria or blue green algae to shrimp.

## Temperature Fluctuations During the Bediding Season
In Indonesia, there is a natural phenomenon related to temperature to be aware of, known as the _bediding_ season. The bediding season, derived from the Javanese term, “_bedhidhing_” (meaning the atmosphere feels cold), is a transition period or change of seasons marked by extreme temperature fluctuations. During this season, the air temperature might drop significantly at night and in the morning, resulting in a cold atmosphere. Meanwhile, the temperature rises during the day, resulting in hot and scorching weather.

Because of these extreme temperature fluctuations, shrimp are prone to stress and their immune systems can deteriorate. As a result, the risk of pathogen infection increases, making shrimp more susceptible to diseases like vibriosis and white spot disease. Shrimp growth is also threatened since the shrimp's energy is spent on survival rather than growth.

## How to Anticipate Temperature Changes during the Bediding Season
As farmers, there are several anticipatory measures that can be taken during the _bediding_ season, including:

The recommended water temperature for shrimp ponds is 26–32°C. ## What is Shrimp Size?
Shrimp size is closely related to the amount of shrimp and becomes a benchmark for profits in one cycle. Here’s the short explanation:

### An indicator of the amount of shrimp in 1 kilogram
A shrimp's size is determined by counting how many shrimp there are in every one kilogram. For instance, if you find a size 50 shrimp, it means there are 50 shrimp per one kilogram. The smaller the shrimp size number, the heavier and bigger the shrimp.

### Benchmark for selling prices
Shrimp size becomes a benchmark for selling prices to suppliers and an estimate of the future profits. Therefore, the smaller the shrimp size number, the higher the selling price and vice versa. For example, size 50 shrimp has a higher price than size 100 shrimp.

## The minimal size target of vannamei shrimp
Farmers usually aim for a minimum size of 100 during the first partial harvest. Size 100 shrimp already has a solid economic value and the demand for it is quite high. In addition to size 100, the demand for size 90 to size 50 shrimp on both domestic and export markets is high as well.

## How to Calculate Vannamei Shrimp Size?
Once you understand what shrimp size is, you also need to understand how to calculate vannamei shrimp size. Apart from being calculated at harvest, vannamei shrimp size can also be calculated on a certain Day of Culture (DoC) through [sampling](https://jala.tech/blog/cultivation-tips/does-weekly-sampling-really-cause-losses-in-shrimp-farms).

Sampling is the activity of monitoring shrimp condition through multiple samples in feeding trays or nets. This activity is conducted periodically to determine the size, growth rate, Average Body Weight (ABW), and [Average Daily Gain (ADG)](https://jala.tech/blog/cultivation-tips/what-is-adg) of the shrimp from time to time. From the sampling results, farmers can also identify potential disease symptoms.

During sampling, you can use the following formula for calculating shrimp size:

For example, a farmer conducted sampling on DoC of 56 days and found that the ABW of his shrimp sample was 10.47 grams. The farmer wanted to know the shrimp size, hence he did the following calculations:

Size = 1,000 grams / 10.47 grams = 95,5

From the calculation above, the shrimp size obtained is 95.5 shrimp/kg.

## Conclusion
In vannamei shrimp farming, size is 
- A measurement based on the amount of shrimp in every one kilogram
- One of the benchmarks for selling prices

How to Calculate Vannamei Shrimp Size: Here's the Complete Explanation!

The vannamei shrimp life cycle consists of several stages, starting from eggs to finally becoming adult shrimp. Every developmental stage has different characteristics.

It is important to understand the life cycle of vannamei shrimp larvae to provide them with appropriate treatment. By understanding the life cycle of vannamei shrimp, you can identify their needs and adjust their surroundings.

## What is the Life Cycle of Vannamei Shrimp?
The life cycle of vannamei shrimp begins with spawning between male and female shrimp. Female shrimp that have reached maturity or have reached 7-8 months and have an orange color on their backs can become broodstock. 

The female shrimp will release pheromones that stimulate male shrimp. After that, the mating process occurs. Later, the mating process between the male and female shrimp produces eggs which will be laid by the female shrimp.

About 4-5 hours later, female shrimp or now broodstock lay eggs. These eggs are pre-larvae which will later develop into cultivated vannamei shrimp.

Furthermore, read the following explanation about stages of shrimp life cycle:

### 1. Eggs
A broodstock is usually capable of delivering 500,000-1,000,000 eggs each time it lays eggs. These eggs are kept apart from their broodstock in a different pond.

It takes 12-16 hours for the eggs to eventually hatch into microscopic larvae (naupli).

### 2. Naupli
Naupli or nauplius is the initial stage of development of vannamei shrimp larvae. At this stage, shrimp larvae at this stage have food reserves such as egg yolk stored in their bodies, hence they do not need artificial feed intake yet.

Throughout the naupli stage, the larvae undergoes six changes of form, namely Nauplius I, Nauplius II, Nauplius III, Nauplius IV, Nauplius V, and Nauplius VI.

### 3. Zoea
Naupli will grow into zoea or 1.05–3.30 mm shrimp larvae. At this stage, zoea undergo three changes of form, namely Zoea I, Zoea II, and Zoea III, and can be fed natural feed. This stage lasts for 3-4 days.

### 4. Mysis
At the mysis stage, the larvae start to resemble shrimp because they have a fan-shaped tail. These larvae have the characteristic of moving backwards and bending their bodies (Azizah, 2018). 

Similar to zoea, mysis will undergo three changes in form, namely Mysis I, Mysis II, and Mysis III.

### 5. Post Larvae
The count used at this stage uses days, for example if the post larvae are 1 day old, they are PL1. Apart from that, shrimp in the post-larvae stage have started to actively move around.

Post larvae are usually raised until PL11-PL12. At this stage, the post-larvae is known as [shrimp fry](https://jala.tech/blog/cultivation-tips/the-strategy-to-choose-the-right-shrimp-fry) which are resistant to rearing conditions and are ready to be stocked in ponds.

### 6. Juvenile
Juvenile is the next stage of the shrimp life cycle following post larvae. At this stage, the shape of the shrimp already resembles adult shrimp. 

However, this stage is considered a vulnerable period in the shrimp life cycle because shrimp require a habitat with the right amount of feed and environmental conditions (Putri, Nitisupardjo, & Hendrarto, 2014). At this stage, the shrimp are transported from the hatchery to the farm for cultivation.

### 7. Young Shrimp
After 80-90 days from the juvenile stage, the shrimp will grow to be young shrimp. Its weight depends on the [cultivation system in the farm](https://jala.tech/blog/cultivation-tips/shrimp-farm-type), ranging from extensive to supra-intensive.

### 8. Adult Shrimp
About 25-30 days later, the young shrimp grow to be adult shrimp, and this is the final stage of the shrimp life cycle. 

Shrimp can be said to be adult starting 4 months after the juvenile phase. In this stage, the shrimp are ready to be harvested because they already reach enough economic value.

## Tips for Rearing Shrimp Larvae
Vannamei shrimp larvae require the proper treatment during their life cycle to ensure the best potential growth into shrimp. Here are some measures that need to be taken to rear vannamei shrimp larvae:

### 1. Maintain Water Quality

Water is a crucial factor since it is the habitat where shrimp larvae grow. Therefore, make sure that the water quality parameters in the rearing pond, such as pH, temperature, [salinity](https://jala.tech/blog/cultivation-tips/change-of-salinity-level-shrimp-ponds), and dissolved oxygen are in ideal conditions.

It is best to measure [water quality parameters](https://jala.tech/baruno) every day and record developments over time. These records can provide insights to help you take action in cultivation.

### 2. Manage Feed Properly
During the rearing period, shrimp larvae consume natural feed such as phytoplankton and zooplankton, especially since the zoea stage. However, if necessary, the hatchery will also provide artificial feed based on the nutritional needs of each larvae stage.

Shrimp larvae are fed 4-6 times a day in the [hatchery](https://jala.tech/blog/shrimp-industry/the-crucial-sector-in-shrimp-industry-hatchery). As the age of the shrimp larvae adds, the size of the feed and the dose given will increase. This is because the nutritional needs of shrimp larvae are increasing.

### 3. Prevent Diseases

Zoea Syndrome is one disease that often attacks shrimp larvae and is characterized by the larvae's unwillingness to eat since the Zoea I stage.

To prevent the spread of disease, it is best to separate the spawning tanks from the larvae rearing tanks. Additionally, maintain the sterility of the rearing area by, for example, making sure the person that helps with spawning them has received disinfection.

### 1. Giant Freshwater Prawn
Next is the giant freshwater prawn (_Macrobrachium rosenbergii_), which is commonly found in rivers and coastal estuaries in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and China. With a large body size, reaching up to 30 cm, and sweet, juicy flesh, giant freshwater prawns have a slow growth rate, taking about 180 days to reach a high economic value.

Giant freshwater prawns come in various colors such as green, blue, brown, and yellow, with a curved long rostrum and longer claws compared to their legs.

### 2. Monkey River Prawn
The monkey river prawn (_Macrobrachium lar_) is commonly found in the West Indo-Pacific region. This type of shrimp thrives in both saltwater and freshwater habitats. Still, it is one of the most common types of freshwater shrimp cultivated in farms, where cultivation approximately takes 110 days.

Monkey river prawns have a considerably large body, with lengths reaching up to 18 cm. They can withstand high salinity in water, and exhibit good resistance to diseases, contributing to high productivity.

### 3. Red Nose Shrimp
Another type of cultivated shrimp with high economic value is the red nose shrimp (_Caridina gracilirostris_). They can be found in various regions such as Japan, Fiji, Indonesia, and Madagascar, particularly in rivers and estuaries.

These yellow-orange, slightly transparent shrimp are not only sold as food but also popular as aquarium decorations due to their attractive red rostrum. They also consume algae, which makes them beneficial for aquarium owners.

Freshwater crayfish (_Astacoidea_) is another type of freshwater shrimp commonly cultivated in farms. This type of shrimp lives in swamps, lakes, and rivers of various continents. Due to its low stress level and disease susceptibility, as well as the ability to grow quickly, this type of freshwater shrimp can be cultivated easily in soil-based ponds.

Several kinds of popular freshwater crayfish for cultivation include the red claw crayfish, red swamp crayfish, which is smaller in size, and the common yabby, known for its high tolerance towards extreme weather conditions including drought.

### 5. Roshna Prawn
The final type of shrimp on the list is the roshna prawn (_Palaemon styliferus_). This type of shrimp is also commonly found in Indo-Pacific regions including Iraq, Bangladesh, and Hong Kong. These freshwater shrimp grow well in tropical areas.

Roshna prawns are pale yellow and slightly transparent with a cone-shaped head are popularly processed as ebi with a high market price which makes it attractive for farmers.
