Last Friday, on March 4, 2022, JALA held a seminar with the topic “Shrimp Cultivation: Career Opportunity in the Pandemic Era”. This event was held in ShrimpHub by JALA Banyuwangi and welcomed university students from the School of Health and Natural Science (SIKIA) of Airlangga University (Unair) and the Faculty of Agriculture and Fisheries (FPP) of 17 Agustus 1945 University (Untag). The event, which focused on sharing and discussions, obtained positive feedback from the attendees, as seen from their enthusiasm in participating in the discussions.
This seminar started in the morning and was opened by a presentation from Mr Yanuar of Shrimp Club Indonesia (SCI). Mr Yanuar shared some basic knowledge about shrimp farming. The event proceeded with a presentation about JALA’s innovation in the cultivation industry by Mr Alfie of JALA. The sharing session was closed by Ms Nabila and Mr Firman, fisheries alumni who shared their experience in pursuing a career in the shrimp industry. The presentations were adjusted to match the overall seminar theme and the attendees were allowed to ask questions.
Aside from the Q&A session, the event also hosted a Leaderless Group Discussion (LGD). The attendees were split into 4 groups. 2 groups spoke for a topic and the other 2 spoke against it. The topics were the opening of new land for shrimp industry in coastal areas and the projection of mergeunsis shrimp (Penaeus merguensis) as an alternative to vannamei shrimp. JALA was happy to see all the attendees actively voicing their thoughts in the LGD.
With each of the event segments, JALA hoped to increase the knowledge of the students in shrimp cultivation and instil their interest to build a linear career in the aquaculture sector. We hoped the attendees would be more eager to be involved in the shrimp cultivation industry upon finishing their studies.
