In shrimp farming, water quality is one of the most important aspects for you to monitor as it determines the success of your cultivation. Measuring and monitoring chemical parameters is one way for you to understand the water quality in the ponds.

Unfortunately, you may not always have access to check the chemical parameters in your ponds. Checking usually needs to be done in laboratory facilities, which are often located far from the farm. Additionally, the cost for laboratory checking is quite high, and the process itself takes a considerable amount of time. Due to limited access and the significant effort required, you might choose to check the chemical parameters more rarely, or do not check for them at all.

Introducing the Chemical Parameter Prediction Feature

As a solution to this limitation, JALA App has just released a new feature: Chemical Parameter Prediction. This feature is available for PRO Cycle users and can be accessed from both the web and mobile app. It aims to show estimates for several chemical parameter variables from cultivation ponds everyday. The chemical parameters that can be estimated are:

  • Ammonia
  • Nitrate
  • Nitrite
  • Total Organic Matter (TOM)

This feature is JALA’s solution for you to evaluate farm conditions from a chemical perspective. We hope this feature can help you prevent the decrease of pond water quality which leads to shrimp mortality when you have limited access to laboratory facilities.

Why Use This Feature?

Among the many water quality parameters to monitor, those that fall under the chemical category cannot be known from mere visual observation, unlike physical parameters. You may not always be able to run chemical tests for your pond water in a quick and convenient manner.

Through the prediction of chemical parameters, you can better understand the water quality in the pond and take appropriate steps. For example, TOM in the pond may increase due to the accumulation of feed residues and waste. If the concentration of TOM is predicted to be too high, you need to anticipate the lack of dissolved oxygen (DO) in the pond, which can cause disturbances to shrimp, from decreased appetite to increased possibility of diseases and mortality.

Moreover, excessively high levels of nitrogen compounds also need to be identified and anticipated because they can increase oxygen consumption and requirements while decreasing shrimp's growth rate.

Thus, this feature provides more speed and efficiency to understand the chemical aspect of your pond water quality when you have limited access to direct laboratory facilities. This feature can also be used for daily monitoring, saving farmers the cost of lab tests.

By having chemical parameter predictions from JALA App, you can take preventive measures to mitigate poor water quality by giving the most suitable treatment. Predictions can also be viewed throughout the cultivation without limitations.

How to Use This Feature

The chemical parameter prediction feature is available in both JALA App for web and mobile. Make sure to record the follow data regularly:

  • Stocking in one cycle (at the beginning of cultivation)
  • Feed data (4 days in a row)
  • Physical parameters (4 days in a row)
  • DO
  • pH
  • Temperature
  • Salinity

How to access from web browser (PC)

  1. Open the ‘Excel Input’ menu to fill in the physical parameters and feed data. chemical-prediction-input data-en.png

  2. After filling in the water quality and feed data for four days, the Chemical Prediction feature will automatically display the prediction results. Daily predictions can be viewed on the left side.

  1. Predictions are available in graph format to observe trends.

  2. You can also view predictions in table format. chemical-prediction-table-en.png

  3. To view other predicted parameters, open the filter menu and select the parameters whose prediction values you want to see. chemical-prediction-option-en.png

How to access from mobile app:

  1. Open the “Ponds” menu and choose the pond for which the data will be filled.
  2. Input feed and physical water quality data. chemical-prediction-input data-mobile-id (1).png

  3. After all data has been filled, choose the ‘Prediction’ menu. chemical-prediction-mobile-en.png

  4. Choose the farm, pond, and cycle to see the chemical parameters. The Chemical Prediction feature will only work if all physical water quality and feed data is complete.
  5. Below, you will find the trend graph of each chemical parameter.
  6. There is an option to view predictions in table format.

It should be noted that the chemical prediction feature is designed as an alternative to know the chemical parameters in the pond, but it is not intended to replace the role of laboratory testing in general. This feature is #HeretoHelp you to obtain a better understanding of water quality in your shrimp farm more quickly and easily to take the best steps in advancing cultivation to be more productive and sustainable.
